Introduction

My role: UX Researcher.
Key Goal: Was to provide for aviation professionals to cover the incovenients they face while spending part of they off duty time working in a city they barely know and connect them through a net to help each other and also create a social enviroment.
Solution: Create a way of communication between these profesionals from different locations to share information through an application.
Timeline: October 2020 — December 2020

UX Process

  1. Definition

The product Initial hypothesis was questioning different things such as if professionals from the aviation sector had an app specially created for them to used in their leisure time while being working abroad, and if they dont, would they find it useful? Also, understand their needs are there enough apps and information on the internet for them? I create a lean ux canvas to define the target I was trying to reach.

2. UX Research

Goals & Hypothesis

Research process was first based on my own experience and my co workers experience as cabin crew, but that was just the beginning, what really made me be sure and to prove me there was a real need of something specific just for crews was actually research, did not really matter the age or background.

Crew agreed that way too often they had the feeling they can´t really do anything whenever they want to when they are abroad, specially one of the main limitations is their irregular working schedule, because sometimes during the week, theres no much to do, so having the possibility to connect with people that understand their work and have the same issues and also creating a social enviroment it´ll be an advanced for sure. So definetely it has been validated.

Survey results

The first contact with users was made through an online survey that I sent out to all my contacts and post it on social media . It had 5 questions, it was filled by people from ages 18 to 40 aprox.
The results proved that the use of internet and social network while staying in different cities are crucial for them, and also the possibility of an exclusive application just for crews was really welcome so they can share their daily working issues and create kind of a network from it.

Interviews

Next step I made with posible users were personal interviews.
I interviewed 4 people, ages 21 to 29, mostly females, all of them based in Madrid, but coming from different places in Spain. The main insight was that from 4 completely different people with differents characters they struggle often because of this.

User persona & User journey

User Journey

Clara´s next flight is destination Berlin, she doesn´t really know the city or someone to meet there, is the middle of the week so she is aware that it might not be much to do, but she is determined to go out, she search on her phone and Crew app reviews appear in her browser, so she decides to give it a try, she ends it having plans for the afternoon and doing dome tourism, she likes the place she visits so much that she decides to share it with her contacts through the application.

3. Interaction Design

I designed a Sitemap based on the needs I wanted to cover and thinking about what the application should endorse for the user and provide them with what might help in different ways.

User flow

The first user flow I created base on the different steps to navigate through the initial wireframes of the application.

MI-FI Onboarding & User Journey

The onboarding more detailed and specific.

User testing results.

In general, all the task were completed successfully, but I did need to make a few changes in the app after, just so it could be more intuitive at first sight.

Conclusions

I focused almost entirely on the UX process of Crew App, but my main idea for the UI visuals would be something like the following screens that I created.

It has been an interest project, since I´ve been part of the aviation environment for almost 3 years, so knowing from my own experience and my friends/colleagues the issues of not being able to enjoy as much just because you feel that outside this job no one can really understand 100 % what you are going through, and also creating a network to help each other is always really helpful.
